With Election Defeat Looming, Trump Admin Axes Senior Jewish Official

Bonnie Glick

On the eve of a likely defeat in the hotly contested presidential election, the Trump administration fired its senior-most Jewish official who was set to take over the United States Agency for Intentional Development (USAID), according to internal correspondence obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

Bonnie Glick, USAID deputy administrator, was informed of her termination late Friday by John McEntee, the administration’s director of presidential personnel. Glick was one of USAID’s top remaining officials following the resignation in April of former head Mark Green.

Glick was set to assume control of the international aid organization on Friday evening after Acting USAID Administrator John Barsa was forced to step down under the Federal Vacancies Reform Act, which only permits the acting heads of agencies to serve for 210 days. The law initiated a situation in which only Glick had the power to act as USAID’s leader.

It was not immediately clear why Glick was terminated. McEntee’s one-sentence letter to Glick only stated that she was terminated “effective immediately.” She was given just two hours’ notice, according to sources with knowledge of the matter.

Glick, who is Jewish, was the senior-most Senate confirmed female Republican serving in the administration.

Glick was a stalwart Trump administration foot soldier during her time at USAID. She pushed developing nations to end their reliance on China and most recently spearheaded efforts to encourage U.S. allies to move away from Beijing’s 5G technological services, an effort also backed by the Trump administration State Department.
