While victims of these crimes could vary in age, the most effected group, both in terms of number of victims (68,013) and in total financial loss ($835,164,766), were people over the age of 60. Elder Fraud along with Business Email Compromise (BEC)/Email Account Compromise (EAC), Tech Support Fraud, and Ransomware continue to be key areas of concern for business and individuals. The total losses from all reported Internet-based crimes totaled over $3.5 billion dollars in 2019 alone, solidifying cyber security as a prevalent and concerning issue.
