BuzzFeed Publishes Ocasio-Cortez’s Impeachment Claims Without Fair Representation

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) spoke with BuzzFeed News and expressed her opinion that several top Trump administration officials should be removed from public office and never serve the American people again. Ocasio-Cortez, who voiced her approval of impeaching President Donald Trump this past April, said both Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo aren’t “fit to serve in public office – ever again.”

She told BuzzFeed News, “It looks like from the evidence it’s entirely possible and likely that Mike Pence is at the very least complicit in a crime. And if not a crime, a violation of his very oath as vice president.” She added, “I don’t think that either of them are fit to serve in public office — ever again.”

Ocasio-Cortez later included Attorney General Bill Barr in her list of removable Trump officials and said “Barr, as well, is implicated in all of this and it entirely seems that they are continuing to pursue this pattern [of corruption].”

Much of Ocasio-Cortez’s evidence rested on the controversial July 25 phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in addition to subsequent public hearings involving State Department employees, current or former White House staffers, and other interested parties.

BuzzFeed also quoted another Democratic congresswoman, Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee, who sits on the House Judiciary Committee that is overseeing the impeachment hearings. But Jackson-Lee did not agree with Ocasio-Cortez and told BuzzFeed, “We don’t want to prejudge where we’re going. This is a preceding dealing with the president of the United States.”

But that was where BuzzFeed stopped in its article; it quoted Ocasio-Cortez extensively on impeachment and added a brief rebuttal from another Democratic congresswoman on whether it was correct to remove Pence, Pompeo, and Barr from office. No comment from Republican sources or lawmakers was included in BuzzFeed’s article, which would have provided a fair representation of Ocasio-Cortez’s impeachment claims to BuzzFeed’s audience. Instead, the reader was left with a biased article on impeachment reaching into the top brass of the Trump administration.
