We wash daily, rinse our hands all the time, floss and brush our teeth, and wear clean clothes. We paint a picture of perfect health on the outside, but how can we make sure everything’s looking good on the inside too?
The answer is simple: take a look at your feet. Our feet carry us everywhere, but their role in our overall health can often be ignored.
As we go about our days, blood settles in our feet, making them feel heavy, tired, and in need of some attention. Some alternative-medicine practitioners also believe that a buildup of fluid in the feet can lead to an accumulation of toxins, which will eventually herald poor health.
Luckily, there’s an entirely natural foot detox that could help eradicate these toxins, and it uses really easy-to-find ingredients and a simple 4-step method. “Occasional feet detoxification,” says Healthy Living Idea, “is a must to help restore blood flow and lymph into the torso.”
Here’s how to prepare this DIY foot detox for yourself.
1. Gather and prepare your ingredients
You’ll need adhesive gauze pads (Band-Aids will work), an onion, a bulb of garlic, water, a kettle and teapot, and a pair of socks.
Garlic and onion are known for their potent anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and immune-boosting properties. When these members of the allium family are heated and placed against the skin directly, practitioners believe that they encourage the pores to open and can lift toxins out of the body from beneath the skin.
2. Make the detoxifying concoction
Finely chop the onions and garlic to maximize their surface area. Place them in the teapot and cover with pre-boiled water from the kettle to the halfway mark; the garlic and onions will release a compound called allicin, which has detoxifying properties.
Place the teapot on the stovetop and reheat the water until it reaches boiling point. At this stage, remove the teapot from the heat and allow your mixture to cool slightly.
3. Prepare and attach your bandages
Dampen the bandages or Band-Aids by pouring your freshly made, warm concoction over the gauze pads, making sure the adhesive areas don’t get wet. While they are still damp, affix the bandages to the bottoms of your feet.
If you have any particular problem areas, like parts of the feet that feel particularly sore, then you may want to focus on these areas. If you want to target a specific body part, then DailyOM recommends using this foot reflexology chart to find out where the bandage should be placed.
Once your bandages have been placed, put on a pair of comfy socks to make sure they are not dislodged during the night.
4. See the results
The next part is not very labor-intensive at all. Simply tuck yourself in, enjoy a restful night’s sleep, and peel the bandages or Band-Aids away in the morning. You will likely notice that the garlic-water-soaked pads are colored brown; this means your overnight detox has had the desired effect.
This process is safe, so you can feel free to use it as often as you like. Additionally, if you are feeling unwell or are suffering a seasonal cold, then this could be the perfect time for a top-up. The garlic water foot detox is easy, and it’s inexpensive compared to many drug store alternatives.
