Democrats are worried.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may be the future of the Democrat party. Her brand of socialism—she doesn’t call it that—is attractive to millennials who have indicated they will vote for socialist candidates.
The DNC establishment only has its self to blame for the creeping takeover of the party by Bernie Sanders socialists. It worked behind the scenes to take down Sanders. It won’t have such luck with candidates like Ocasio-Cortez and other rising socialists.
Then again. Ocasio-Cortez might be yet another deep state orchestration designed to break up the party and sow political chaos and violence. Trump splintered the Republicans and conservatives into three camps—those unwavering in their support, Never Trump neocons grumbling on the sidelines, and assorted Republicans, independents, and stray Democrats who take a more pragmatic approach to his rule.
Ocasio-Cortez—a woman of privilege masquerading as a bootstrap Latina—is the next phase. Female socialists—Sara Innamorato, Summer Lee, Elizabeth Fiedler—are rising in popularity and Democrats are beginning to listen to them. They will have no problem working with Elizabeth Warren after Nancy Pelosi is out of the way.
It’s entirely possible Democrats will take back Congress at the end of this term. In order to stave off complete disaster within the party, the DNC will strike compromises with the growing socialist faction.
I don’t think America will end up with millennial socialism. The national security state and its military-industrial and surveillance apparatus will not go gently into the night. It might allow a partial drift back into LBJ era socialism, but this is now untenable. The economy will implode before that can happen.
At best, it will manage to finagle a few social programs and take down what remains of the border and allow illegal immigrants to enter and repay their hosts during the next election.
Finally, it should be noted that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez removed anti-war and anti-interventionist statements from her platform. These were scrubbed from her website.
In other words, the millennial socialists will have no problem working with the national security state, the Pentagon, and the CIA. For generations American foreign policy has remained constant regardless of whatever tenant takes up residence in the White House.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will be no exception to the rule.
